Emilie Loring Slept Here

Blue Hill, at last! It’s great to be back!

Blue Hill Inn, established 1840

I checked in at the Blue Hill Inn, which was called “Bluehill House” when Emilie stayed here in the 1920s and 30s.

I wonder which rooms she stayed in. This one, perhaps? It’s nice to think so, I’ve walked in so many of the same places as she.

Happy Landings in Bookstores

All the way here, I stopped at bookstores to see how Happy Landings is faring. I’ve found it in “Maine Biography” and simply “Biography.” It’s easy to spot that pretty, blue cover!

At each place, I signed books and left bookmarks to be handed out freely. If you are close to Portland, Freeport, Rockland, or Blue Hill, stop in!

Wild, Maine Blueberries

And yes, I bought fresh, wild blueberries as soon as I arrived. Yum.

I want to polish my presentation for the Blue Hill Public Library tomorrow, so I won’t linger here tonight. (Why is it that we often get such good ideas at the last moment?!)

So many slides!!!

Emilie Loring Tea, July 31st

Our Emilie Loring Tea is coming up in just a few days–Monday, July 31. Have you decided where/how you will have yours? I will get this presentation done tomorrow night and then turn my mind toward it.

I know that there will be tea, goodies, and a pretty, Maine setting. Alongside Di Vernon’s trout stream? Under a tree by Julie Lorraine’s reversing falls? Near Seven Chimneys or Stone House? Here, in the Blue Hill Inn? I’ll surprise myself. 🙂

Happy Landings, everyone!

  1. Happy Sunday! I hope your travels and talks are going well. I am re-reading your bio of Emilie. Enjoying it and thinking about details more. A couple of completely unrelated points:

*All the talk of Emilie’s family history inspired me to dig more in my family geneology. On some branches I am back to the 1700s in Europe. One branch I’ve been stumped on. I am told grandma’s family has Cherokee Indian roots as well. I have not found that. I joined a free site and found that we had English ancestors in Delaware as early as 1650. Wow! I’ve only thought of us as German, French and Cherokee.

*I caught “War Games” movie on PBS last night. There was a Loring Air Force base in Maine, apparently eliminated in the 1990s. It was reportedly named after a Major Charles Loring, who was a pilot in WW2 & Korea, earning a medal of honor for his Korean service. Any relation to Emilie Loring’s family?

*You talk about Emilie knowing the author of “Pollyanna,” Eleanor H Porter (282). The optimism of “Pollyanna” and Emilie’s optimism go well together I’d think. I love that Disney movie!

    Happy Landings!

    1. I haven’t found a connection between the Loring AFB and Victor’s family, but there could easily be a deep one.

I, too, have early ancestors in New England. I wonder if they were neighbors to Emilie’s ancestors. I’ll have to look!

I loved the movie “Pollyanna!” I have a distinct memory of her and the limb of that tree outside her bedroom window.
